Fishing in New Jersey

24 May

Last week I was able to get out fishing for the first time in 2011. I managed two fish, nothing special a sunny and a blue gill. It didn’t really matter, since I was glad to catch anything my first time out, midday. Not exactly prime fishing time, but that’s when I could get out. The view isn’t quite the same as last year, but it isn’t the worst sight either. It’s just great to be able to get out there. A couple turtles decided to hang around with me too while I was fishing. More on turtles later. How exciting! Enjoy the pictures. Next time I’ll try and remember that I have a real camera, and don’t need to use my phone.

Luck, Picks and the Jersey Shore

8 Jan

Here’s how bad things have gotten in Carolina: after finishing 2-14 and being awarded the top pick in the draft, they declared they would take Andrew Luck. Hearing this, Andrew luck decided he would be better off returning to Stanford. I can’t say that I blame him, I even said that the Panthers made the decision for him.

The kicker is, Jim Harbaugh, Luck’s coach at Stanford, (and probably a factor in Luck’s decision), decided he was going to bolt to the NFL. I really don’t have a comment, other than what a douche. Way to leave the guy who in all likelihood got you that NFL head coaching gig out to dry. This year he’s slated to go #1; next year with a new coach/offensive system, his stock could slide. Yes, it’s a risk Luck took not declaring for the draft, but still, what a jerk move. Rome would be proud. Yes, I’m all over them this year. #fanboy

Quick picks for this weekend, before the games get started, my pick in bold:

Saints at Seahawks – The Seahawks are awful, just awful. It’s embarrassing that they got into the playoffs at 7-9, but what may be more embarrassing is that no one in that division was better.

Jets at Colts – The Colts should play the entire game barefoot to distract Sexy Rexy.

Ravens at Chiefs – Any money Matt Cassell gets should be split 50-50 with Brandon Pollard. Oh, and **** you Pollard. #stillbitter

Packers at Eagles – Supposed to be a windy one in Philly tomorrow night, but if anyone can throw a ball that cuts through the wind, it’s Vick. If throwing isn’t an option, I hear Vick is a pretty good choice to run it, too.

Caught the first episode of Jersey Shore (guilty pleasure), and wow, did this season go downhill fast. Faster than usual, at least. Normally it’s a couple episodes before dissent among the ranks turns everything hostile, but right off the bat this season it’s out of control. A few thoughts: New Girl sucks, Sammi was completely within her right to laugh at New Girl, Situation will be spending a lot of time in the smush room (but not getting laid), and Pauly D remains the man.

Farewell Vermont, You Will Be Missed

8 Sep
Over the past year, I’ve had a great experience moving out and living on my own in Vermont. I’ve liked what I’ve done in my career, met some great people, and thoroughly enjoyed the snowboarding. However, during the past year, my perspective in life has changed, as have my priorities. When I left, I wanted to try something new and go out on a limb, as well as snowboard as much as possible while I can. I’ve successfully done this, but events over the course of the past year have made me reconsider what truly is important in life.
After a lot of thought, and a lot of switching back and forth, I have decided I will be moving back to Jersey at the end of the month. It is a bittersweet decision, and there is a lot I will miss about Vermont. The weather, the scenery, the people I’ve met, have all been amazing and will be missed. But as I said before, I have realized how important it is to stay close to family and friends, and feel that the best decision is to move back to Jersey. Vermont, it’s been great, and I will be back, but it’s time to start new in an old place.

50 Cent in Atlantic City

2 Jul

Last weekend, Dayna and I went to see 50 Cent at the House of Blues in Atlantic City. Yes, the tickets were free, she won them on the radio. I gotta say, he put on a hell of a show. Very high energy, and everyone was really into it. He also seemed much more approachable than I imagined him from listening to him. Yep that’s right, 50 Cent seems like a nice guy. Now, no more reading, just pictures.

The Hoagie Lives

19 May

Today I saw a sight that made me extremely happy – the word hoagie being used in Vermont. Granted it was just on a generic wrapper that they happened to have, but still, it made me very happy to see “hoagie” in reference to a sandwich up here. Which brings me to my next point. I’ll be heading back to Jersey for a long weekend tomorrow, catching 2 of the Sox/Phillies games this weekend at Citizens Bank Park. I really like what MLB has done, putting the Sox in Philly the past 4 years or so – gives me a legitimate chance to see the Sox, no matter how terrible they’re playing. A quarter of the way through the season, and sitting at .500? C’mon now.

Hoagie!

Summer Shred Sessions

17 May

Even though it’s late May, there’s still some riding to be done these next couple weekends. Need that last fix? Here’s where to get it:

  • Mountain Creek is holding a Stockpile Session May 22nd, in what they’re claiming to be the first event of it’s kind in Jersey. Apparently they had a 22′ quarterpipe that they’ll be turning into a hikeable set of features. Pretty sick that there will be May riding in Jersey.
  • Stratton and Mount Snow are teaming up Memorial Day weekend to throw the last sessions that I know of in the East. Saturday is the Peace Pipe Jam at the bottom of Carinthia at Mount Snow, and Sunday is the Mountain MAYhem Jam at Stratton (see what they did? They capitalized all the letters of May since the event is in May. Clever bastards.) They’ll be turning all the left over snow from the US Open SlopeStyle course and half pipe into one final on-snow event for the season.
For those of us who won’t be making it out – 1 shredless month down, 6 to go.

The Accident

30 Apr
This past Friday, I was in a pretty nasty wreck on the NY State Thruway. I was headed back to New Jersey for the weekend, and about halfway home things went wrong. A car was parked on the shoulder, and, without signaling or getting up to speed, just pulled into my lane. I had next to no time to react, but managed to slam on my brakes and swerve in time to avoid the douche that pulled into the lane. The car behind me, however, slammed into the back of my car. This sent me spinning off the road, flipping as I left the pavement. Miraculously, I was uninjured, as was my dog Max who was with me in the car. I ended up upside down, clutching him to my chest so I must have caught him as we were spinning. All in all, we were very lucky to get out with no physical damage done. The car is totaled, and I’m still having a hard time believing it all actually happened. Here are some pictures I took at the scene (my phone and camera will worked, my laptop made it too). Looking at these makes it even harder for me to believe that I walked away. Thanks to everyone who expressed their concern, and a special thanks to my parents for coming to get me 3 hours away in upstate NY and to Dayna for carting me around all weekend. And congrats to TKE and D Phi E on yet another Greek Week win!

This is how my car ended up on the side of the road.

Right side up

Max is doin’ alright.
